Horses

Markway Ranch began “raising” horses in the mind of a young Marc Markway, who at 11 years old knew he wanted to be a veterinarian and have a ranch of his own one day with cattle and horses. There have been some pivotal horses in the 60 plus years since.

It all began with Mighty Dipper (1969), a AAA racehorse who, according to Marc, was the first really “good” horse that he stood in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Dipper was owned by and stood at Markway Ranch for 10 years before being sold.

Markway Ranch purchased Jingo Dazzler (1979) as a 3-year-old and raced him the fall of that year. Although he did well in his five starts, Marc soon realized he would need two jobs to keep up with the racing industry. Dazz turned out to be an excellent pleasure horse and all-around performance sire. One of his foals, Dazzaray, was featured on the cover of the Paint Horse Journal. Dazz was sold, but later was repurchased by Markway Ranch where he stood again for a few years and eventually died as a 27-year-old.

Markway Ranch stood two horses in the early 2000s that produced many good horses. Both 1991 models, Wheeling Mocha “Rock” and Perty Black Buck “Blue” were foundation bred, carrying the bloodlines of Peppy San Badger, Docs Hickory Pretty Buck, and Blackburn.

Rock won several titles due to his excellent versatility in heading, heeling, reining, steer stopping, calf roping, barrels, poles and halter classes, and was featured on the February 2002 cover of the Quarter Horse News.

Daughters and sons of Blue and Rock have been and continue to be used by our family and many others on ranches and in the rodeo world. They have been used to compete in local jackpots, high school and junior high rodeo (at state and national levels), amateur rodeo, high-stakes jackpots and PRCA rodeos. These sires both lived into their late 20s and died on Markway Ranch.

Today, Markway Ranch stands two Frenchmans Guy grandsons at Markway Veterinary Service: Black Tie Guy and French N Firen. One is out of a daughter of Frosty Feature by Truckle Feature and the other is out of a daughter of Alive N Firen. Both are grey and sire good-minded foals with good confirmation. A recent Western Horseman article on Frenchmans Guy tells more about this sire.
